Lessons for a Missionary Mom

I have learned a very important lesson over the past two weeks...the Lord is in control of our lives, and He will not give us anything that we can't handle. Let me tell you a little about the lesson I learned.

Two weeks and a day ago, I was able to speak to my wonderful missionary son by phone. We had a conversation that lasted one and a half hours, and I marveled at his strength and growth. He promised me that he would send me a message from the field just as soon as he was able. I waited and waited. I was patient. I waited some more. This is where the faith kicked in. I have had faith that Taylor would be protected and strengthened on his mission all along, but this time, it was different. I am a member of a missionary mom group, and I asked other missionary moms how long it took to hear from their sons/daughters. Big mistake! Those that responded told me they heard from their missionaries immediately upon entrance into Argentina. I became very distraught. In fact, I was almost inconsolable last evening. Larry was so patient with me and wrote me a lovely note. In it, he reminded me that I testified on Sunday of having faith and patience. The Lord is watching out for our son. Sometimes, we just need a reminder!

Well, before going to bed last night, I prayed fervently to help me know that Taylor was okay and that I would hear from him soon. Before my prayer was finished, I had a feeling that I have never had before; it was like someone was hugging me and that Taylor was just fine. I slept restlessly, and as soon as I awakened this morning, I raced to the computer. The first thing I saw was a message from Taylor, "I hope you get this."

Taylor had sent us an email last week, but it never reached us. I believe that the Lord allows us to be tested so that we may be strengthened. I have no doubt in my mind that I will need to practice patience and faith throughout Taylor's mission. He is doing so well, extreme heat and all. He is in an area called Ibarreta, Formosa, Argentina. He is near the border of Argentina and Paraguay. His first companion in Argentina is Elder Dart. Here are some pictures that he sent with this second letter.

Off-Track Adventures

It has been so much fun being off-track with Sarah this time. I have waited for over a year to have some "down" time, and it has actually happened. I have even spent some time working on my New Year's resolutions: I am learning to cook; I have started watching my portion size and eating more healthy; I am taking a moment of each day just for me.

Sarah has been so much fun! She has grown up enough to really enjoy projects and outings more fully. Here are some of the things we have spent time doing together this past week:

Making dinner... Mmmmm, calzones are one of Sarah's favorites!

Baking Valentine cookies!
We took some to Grandma and Grandpa Hansen,
as well as our dear friend who is ill.

Creating our own Valentine craft projects. Sarah's daddy created the pattern for these cute monkey sucker covers (the idea came from the Current catalog). Sarah and I cut, sewed and glued them all. Sarah loves to do crafts! She created her own Valentines and then went wild with the googly eyes! She said that the black and white Valentine is an alien Valentine with all those eyes.

With the time we have left before heading back to school, we are planning a trip to the Children's Museum, an outing to the public library, and a day of painting for Sarah while Mom cleans the basement. I cannot wait for April when we are off-track again!
